Technofeudalism in the AI age names a future that is arriving with polite language. It does not arrive as a king, a castle, or a chain. It arrives as a subscription, a login screen, a model update, a workplace dashboard, a school platform, an automated decision, and a cheerful sentence saying that the system is here to help.
The concept asks whether artificial intelligence may divide society into two uneven classes: those who command AI systems and those who must live under decisions shaped by them. The first group owns models, computing power, datasets, infrastructure, patents, and platforms. The second group may have smartphones, accounts, and passwords, but not real control. They can touch the interface. They cannot govern the machinery behind it.
Definition: technofeudalism is digital dependency organized as social order
Technofeudalism is the thesis that advanced digital platforms can operate less like open markets and more like privately governed estates. In the AI age, this thesis becomes sharper. The estate is no longer only a shopping platform, social network, app store, or cloud service. It is also a system of prediction, recommendation, ranking, scoring, translation, generation, surveillance, and automated judgment.
Yanis Varoufakis (1961– ) popularized a strong version of this argument by claiming that cloud capital has displaced markets and profit from the center of economic life, replacing them with cloud fiefs and cloud rent. Even if one does not accept the claim that capitalism has been killed, the concept is useful because it points to a real shift. More of social life now passes through infrastructures that ordinary people use constantly but cannot meaningfully negotiate.
In the AI version of technofeudalism, power does not only lie in ownership of land, factories, or money. It lies in ownership of computation. It lies in the ability to train models, buy chips, run data centers, collect behavioral data, write platform rules, and decide which kinds of knowledge become visible. The new gate is not made of stone. It is made of access, skill, data, and compute.
The core structure: AI access, AI literacy, and algorithmic lordship
Access is the first wall
The first layer is material access. AI sounds immaterial because people encounter it as text, image, voice, or advice. Yet the system depends on cables, electricity, chips, cloud contracts, devices, broadband, data centers, and capital expenditure. The International Telecommunication Union reported in Facts and Figures 2024 that about 5.5 billion people were online in 2024, while roughly 2.6 billion people remained offline. It also estimated that 93 percent of people in high-income countries used the Internet, compared with only 27 percent in low-income countries.
That gap is not a minor inconvenience. If education, work, welfare, banking, health services, migration paperwork, and public communication move toward AI-assisted systems, lack of stable access becomes civic exclusion. The person without reliable connectivity is not merely missing entertainment. That person may be locked outside the waiting room of the future.
Skill is the second wall
The second layer is AI literacy. Access to a tool does not mean capacity to use it well. A worker who knows how to ask precise questions, verify outputs, protect data, and combine AI with domain knowledge gains leverage. A worker who only knows that AI exists may become more vulnerable to monitoring, replacement, fraud, or quiet humiliation at work.
UNESCO has described the AI divide as unequal access, benefits, and opportunities across regions, communities, and socioeconomic groups. This matters because the divide is not only between countries. It appears inside households, workplaces, schools, and age groups. A teenager with paid tools, fast connectivity, and a parent who understands digital systems receives a different future from a student sharing an old phone on unstable data. A professional trained to supervise AI enters a different labor market from an older worker told to adapt after the workflow has already changed.
Control is the third wall
The third layer is control. A feudal relation is not defined only by poverty. It is defined by dependency under another party’s authority. In AI society, dependency appears when people must submit to automated systems that they cannot inspect, contest, or exit. A hiring model ranks applicants. A credit model sorts borrowers. A welfare system flags suspicion. A content model buries a creator. A workplace system evaluates productivity. The human being receives the result, but the grounds of judgment remain hidden.
This is why technofeudalism is a social concept, not a gadget complaint. The danger is not that machines become clever. The danger is that institutions use clever machines to make power harder to challenge.
Concrete examples: how AI feudal order can enter daily life
Imagine a small shop owner trying to survive in an AI-driven marketplace. The platform predicts demand, recommends prices, ranks sellers, sells advertising, controls search visibility, and may introduce its own competing products. The shop owner still appears independent. Yet independence shrinks when every route to the customer passes through rules written elsewhere.
Imagine a job seeker. One applicant uses AI to polish a resume, simulate interviews, analyze job postings, and prepare portfolio materials. Another applicant lacks the language, confidence, device, or paid access needed to do the same. The formal job market says both are equal applicants. The real contest has already been tilted before the interview begins.
Imagine an elderly citizen dealing with public services. A chatbot replaces the counter. A web form replaces the clerk. A risk score replaces personal explanation. For a digitally confident user, the system may be faster. For someone with weak access or low confidence, the same system becomes a corridor of small defeats. The state has not disappeared. It has been outsourced into interfaces.
In each case, AI is not simply a tool. It becomes a condition of participation. Those who command it gain speed, visibility, and bargaining power. Those who cannot use it well are told that their exclusion is a personal failure. Here technofeudalism performs its cruelest trick: it turns structural inequality into an individual skills problem.

The sentence matters because AI will not automatically liberate or enslave. It will be shaped by ownership, regulation, labor rights, education, public investment, and civic courage. A model trained for public benefit under democratic rules differs from a model used to extract rent from every human action that can be measured.
Criticism and limits: why the word feudalism must be used carefully
The concept has limits. Critics such as Evgeny Morozov (1984– ) warn that techno-feudal language may exaggerate the novelty of the present and make capitalism seem already surpassed. Many AI firms still pursue investment, profit, labor discipline, market power, intellectual property control, and shareholder value. Workers still build hardware, label data, moderate content, maintain warehouses, clean offices, cool servers, and absorb the invisible costs of digital convenience.
That criticism is necessary. If every platform is called a kingdom, analysis becomes theater. Still, the concept remains valuable when used with restraint. It does not need to prove that capitalism is dead. It only needs to show that capitalist power is increasingly organized through private digital domains where access is rented, conduct is monitored, and exit is costly.
Technofeudalism is therefore best understood as a warning concept. It tells us that the AI future may not divide humanity only between employed and unemployed, or rich and poor. It may divide people between those who can question, shape, and audit intelligent systems and those who are merely processed by them.
Why the concept matters for a more democratic AI future
If the AI age is allowed to harden into technofeudalism, the disadvantaged will not only lack tools. They will lack standing. Their data will be harvested, their labor reorganized, their speech ranked, their needs predicted, and their errors recorded. They will be invited to become efficient users of systems they did not choose.
A more democratic future requires more than teaching everyone to type better prompts. It requires universal and meaningful connectivity, public AI education, accessible design, community-based training, worker consultation, algorithmic accountability, public-interest data governance, strong privacy rules, and alternatives to monopoly platforms. The right to understand and contest automated decisions must become part of ordinary citizenship.
Technofeudalism in the AI age finally asks a brutal question in a calm voice. Will artificial intelligence become a common capacity, distributed widely enough to enlarge human freedom? Or will it become the private estate of those who already own the gates? The answer will not be produced by the machine. It will be decided by politics, education, law, labor, and the stubborn refusal to call dependency progress.
